In short, SEO is a two step process that contains both on-site optimization and off-site optimization. First, on-site optimization is placing content on your site that is centered around a specific topic or set of keywords you are trying to target in the search engines. Making sure your content is relevant to the keywords you are targeting is essential to making sure your website appears in the search results.
The next step of SEO is off-site optimization which basically boils down to the number of links pointing to your website. By thinking of each link as a vote for your site, the greater the number of links to your site with a specific phrase as the hypertext the higher your site will rank for that phrase. These backlinks to your site is the most important aspect of SEO, and what you should really concentrate your efforts on when trying to get your website to appear in the search results for a specific phrase.
